About Uncertain, TX

You should know this is a suspense novel with themes of racism, classism, and abuse. It’s important you know that I do not write explicit scenes of abuse. Everything is implied. I don’t write slurs, I don’t write acts of violence, and I believe strong writing allows a reader to fill in the blanks.

Why are you doing this?

In addition to what I said here, I love this story so much, and I (admittedly) burned myself by not having robust sales when I published earlier in my career. I’m proving a point to myself and to any potential publisher/agent who may come along.

I learned. I understand: Publishing is a business before it’s a celebration of art and creativity.

Let’s say I sign up and get invested. Will you abandon this?

No.

How can I trust you?

I mean, okay. We’ve all been burned. But here’s what I want you to understand: this story is written. It is complete. I will put every chapter up. I will even put up a complete and whole version for sale, both digital and print.

Okay, I’m interested. What’s the catch?

No catch, really. I will post a chapter a week (leaving room to speed up posting if the majority clamor for it) until it’s finished. There are 28 chapters. I guess the “catch” is that the first ten will just exist here for free to the public. Ten chapters, 115 pages of my work, free. But I’m not trying to hustle here. A monthly subscription will be $2.50, putting early-comers at being out about $10, less than the price of a paperback and slightly more than a cup of fancy coffee.

On my regular Substack, I’ll post metrics. I’ll post findings and frustrations. I see a lot of serialized fiction here, and I want to add to the conversation my experience with the business and marketing aspect of doing this. I want to be fully transparent and helpful. It’s hard to be an author when your natural instinct isn’t entrepreneurial in nature.

What if I show up late in your posting schedule? Will I miss previous chapters?

Oh god, no! When you sign up for the book (a separate Section of my Substack, be sure to SELECT THIS BOOK), you’ll get a welcome email with the table of contents, up to date at that time, taking you all the way to the start. I daisy chain posts (“Previously, Chapter X” at the top and “Next Chapter” at the bottom) so you can read in order at your pace. The newest chapter will hit your inbox the next Monday at 8:00am Central Time, and on we go until the end.

I really like this and I think the price is too low. How can I support you?

First, bless your kind heart. The best ways to help me build an audience:

  • Read the chapter!

  • Please LIKE the chapter (as in, hit that Heart icon)

  • Use the “share this publication” button and send to a friend or ten.

  • Talk about it on your social media!

  • Tell your friends to read! (This is the real secret about how books are sold. People read it, like it, tell someone about it. It’s not splashy ads or big PR machines. It’s PEOPLE LIKE YOU, TALKING ABOUT IT.

If you do any or all of these, you have my undying gratitude. And, I hope, a dang good story. And how fun for you to say you were in on the ground floor of the Next Big Thing? (I hope!)

I’m in.

Awesome. Use this link to ensure you’re in at the low low low price.
